Days Since Calculator

Track how many days have passed since any date — perfect for habit streaks, sobriety counters, or 'how long has it been since...' questions.

About this tool

Tracking "days since" something happened is the mirror image of counting down to a future date — instead of anticipation, it's a running record, useful for a genuinely wide range of things: days since a habit started (or a bad one stopped), days since a milestone event, or simply satisfying curiosity about how long ago something actually was, since human memory is notoriously bad at accurately judging elapsed time once it stretches beyond a few weeks.

The specific value of calculating this precisely rather than estimating is that rough mental estimates of elapsed time are consistently unreliable in a well-documented way — most people underestimate how long ago distant events were and overestimate how long ago recent ones were, a pattern sometimes called telescoping in memory research. A calculator sidesteps that bias entirely by just doing the arithmetic.

Enter any starting date, and this tool tells you exactly how many days have passed since then — or, if you accidentally pick a future date, how many days remain until it arrives instead, since the same subtraction works both directions. It's deliberately simple: one date in, one precise number out, no assumptions made about what the date represents.

How to use it
  1. Pick the starting date.
  2. Press Calculate.
  3. See exactly how many days have passed (or, if it's in the future, how many days remain).
FAQ
Can I use a future date?

Yes — if you pick a future date, it'll tell you how many days remain until then instead.

Does it count today as day 0 or day 1?

The count is the number of full days elapsed between the start date and today.
