Pace Calculator

Calculate your running or cycling pace (time per km or mile) and speed from a distance and finish time.

About this tool

Pace โ€” expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile, rather than the more intuitive-sounding speed in kilometers or miles per hour โ€” is the standard unit runners and cyclists use for a fairly practical reason: it maps directly onto how training plans and race splits are usually structured. A coach telling you to "hold a 5:30 pace" is giving you a number you can check against your watch every kilometer, whereas a speed in km/h is harder to translate into a moment-to-moment feel for whether you're on target.

The math converting between the two is simple in principle โ€” pace is just the inverse of speed โ€” but doing it in your head while tired, mid-run, or immediately after finishing is exactly the kind of small friction that a calculator removes. Enter a distance and the time it took, and this tool works out both your pace and your equivalent speed, so you can think in whichever unit actually makes sense for what you're planning next.

The same calculation applies identically whether you're running, cycling, or moving under any other means where covering a known distance in a known time is the thing being measured โ€” the tool doesn't care what activity produced the numbers, only what the numbers themselves say about your pace.

How to use it
  1. Enter the distance and choose km or miles.
  2. Enter your finish time (hours, minutes, seconds).
  3. Press Calculate pace to see your pace and speed.
FAQ
Does this work for cycling too, not just running?

Yes โ€” the math is the same distance-and-time calculation regardless of activity.

Can I convert pace back into a finish time for a different distance?

Not directly in this version โ€” this calculates pace and speed from a known distance and time.
