Typing Speed Test (WPM)

Type a short passage against the clock to measure your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.

About this tool

Words per minute (WPM) became the standard way to measure typing speed largely because of typing competitions and secretarial certification tests dating back to the early 20th century, when fast, accurate typing was a genuinely scarce professional skill worth formally measuring. The measurement itself is simple โ€” total words typed divided by time taken โ€” but it only means something when paired with an accuracy figure, since typing fast while making constant mistakes isn't actually faster in any way that matters once you account for the time spent fixing errors.

That's why a typing test worth using measures both numbers together rather than just one. Speed without accuracy is a hollow number โ€” anyone can "type fast" by mashing keys โ€” and accuracy without speed doesn't tell you much about real-world typing either, since almost anyone can type accurately if they go slowly enough. The combination of the two is what actually reflects typing skill.

This test works by timing you against a short, fixed passage: the clock starts the moment you begin typing and stops once your input exactly matches the target text, at which point it calculates your words-per-minute based on the actual time elapsed and your accuracy based on how closely your final input matched character-for-character. It's a quick, no-account-needed way to check where your typing speed currently stands.

How to use it
  1. Start typing the shown passage into the box โ€” the timer starts on your first keystroke.
  2. Keep typing until you've matched the full passage exactly.
  3. Your WPM and accuracy appear automatically when you finish.
