Time Card Rounding Calculator

Round a clock-in or clock-out time to the nearest common payroll increment (5, 10, or 15 minutes) — the same logic many timesheet systems use.

About this tool

Payroll systems very rarely pay employees for the exact minute they clocked in — instead, most round actual clock-in and clock-out times to the nearest scheduling increment, commonly 5, 10, or 15 minutes, partly for administrative simplicity and partly because it's been standard payroll practice for long enough that most timesheet software has this rounding built in as a default behavior.

The rounding itself follows a simple rule — round to the nearest increment, so a clock-in a few minutes before the mark rounds down and one a few minutes after rounds up — but predicting exactly where that rounding boundary falls, and what the resulting rounded time will actually be, is easy to get slightly wrong doing the mental math quickly, especially with 15-minute increments where the midpoint isn't an obvious round number.

This tool applies that rounding directly: enter an hour and minute along with your rounding increment, and it calculates the correctly rounded time — useful for checking what a payroll system is likely to record for a given clock-in or clock-out, or for understanding exactly how a specific timestamp will be adjusted before it affects a paycheck.

How to use it
  1. Enter the hour and minute.
  2. Choose a rounding increment.
  3. Press Round to see the adjusted time.
FAQ
What rounding rule does this use?

Standard 'round to nearest' — for example, with 15-minute rounding, anything from :00–:07 rounds down and :08–:14 rounds up to the next quarter hour.

Is this legally compliant for payroll?

Rounding rules vary by jurisdiction and employer policy — this is a general-purpose calculator, not legal or payroll compliance advice.
