Golden Hour Calculator

Find the best warm, soft photography light — golden hour — for any date and location, based on sunrise and sunset times.

About this tool

Photographers refer to the period shortly after sunrise and shortly before sunset as "golden hour" because of a genuine optical effect, not just an aesthetic preference: when the sun sits low near the horizon, its light travels through more of the atmosphere to reach you, scattering more of the blue wavelengths and letting more of the warm, orange-red light through — which is why photos taken during this window tend to have that distinctive soft, warm quality that midday sun simply doesn't produce.

Despite the name, golden hour isn't literally a fixed 60-minute window — the exact duration and quality of the light shifts with latitude, season, and atmospheric conditions, and the commonly used approximation (roughly the hour nearest sunrise or sunset) is a practical rule of thumb rather than a precise astronomical boundary, similar to how "rush hour" doesn't mean exactly sixty minutes either.

This tool builds on the same solar calculation used by the Sunrise & Sunset Calculator, estimating the morning and evening golden-hour windows for any date and location you enter. It's aimed specifically at photographers and anyone planning outdoor shoots or events around the most flattering natural light of the day, rather than general sunrise/sunset reference, which the standalone Sunrise & Sunset tool handles more directly.

How to use it
  1. Pick a date.
  2. Enter your location's latitude and longitude.
  3. Press Calculate to see the morning and evening golden-hour windows.
